Happy 78th Birthday Dame Elizabeth Taylor!

Born 27 February 1932

"The problem with people who have no vices is that generally you can be pretty sure they're going to have some pretty annoying virtues."

She truly is a national treasure, isn't she?

Her twitter account has been terribly quiet lately. I hope she is well.

BALLERINA BEDDING for GIRLS

hot pink lime green ballerina bedding bed bag set in a bedroom picture

I can breathe a sigh of relief that I found this set of ballerina bedding for girls that is anything but wimpy. To give you a little background on that remark (and to let you know why I haven't been forthcoming with any new bedding sets and bedroom decorating ideas lately), a lady across town was building a fabulous home that a friend of mine was contracted to decorate from top to bottom. After much begging, she actually let me go with her one day when she was taking some measurements on the window sizes and the owner and I were introduced.

Long story short, my friend caught the flu and needed me to take the job and finish it which thrilled me to no end because the owner seemed sweet and the home was to die for...and then I met the teen diva in residence. This teenage girl was amazingly certain about what colors she wanted in her room AND that she wanted ballerina bedding for girls that WAS NOT wimpy! How a young girl could be so opinionated at such a young age about bedding was almost scary. But EUREKA!!! I found this set and if (and that's a pretty darn big if) she approves it my work is done.

One trend I see in bedroom decorating ideas is that teen girls bedding in pastels is falling behind bright colors. Wait to see if this holds true through summer before you make plans to follow this fashion trend.

One of my favorite onscreen couples. . .

Michaela Anne's "Seven Questions for Songwriters..."

SEVEN QUESTIONS FOR SONGWRITERS
1. What makes you write?
Anything and everything. And the fact that I start to feel crazy if I go too long without writing.

2. Who is the greatest unknown influence on your music?
Well it's not too unknown to those who listen to my music....but definitely my family. My dad was a submarine captain so we grew up moving every year or two all over the country and abroad. This experience, along with my dad being away a lot and watching my mama deal with living as a military wife and mother....this all is a huge influence on my music.

3. What is your most closeted, secret, guilty and humiliating musical pleasure?
Really horrible cheesy pop music. At the same time that I'm criticizing it and saying how depressing it is that this is what's popular today, I'm secretly suppressing my urge to jumping and dance.

4. What established artist made you want to write songs, and why?
Well since I wrote my first songs (without lyrics) when I was 6 and learning piano, it probably would have been Bach (the stripped down made for beginners Bach tunes). But writers like Gillian Welch, David Rawlings, Buddy Miller, Patty Griffin, Hank Williams, Willie Nelson, and Townes Van Zandt make me want to write better songs. The incredible stories they write married perfectly to the most beautiful melodies inspire me to be more inventive and imaginative and just to hone my craft!

5. Advice for just-starting songwriters on establishing yourself as a woman in the industry?
I am a baby in this songwriting music industry so I'm the one that needs the advice! But the words of wisdom I often hear are to believe in yourself even when nobody else does and persevere!

6. Why country?
Because it feels the best and it's what naturally comes out.

7. Favorite backwoods expression?
It's sunnier than angels pickin' cotton.

This makes me laugh.

Physics of Curling

One of my favorite sports to watch during the winter Olympics is curling. Curling may seem simple and boring on the surface, but it is really a complex sport with much skill and strategy involved. There are two important principles of physics that influence curling. The first principle is friction. According to Newton's third law of motion, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. So, as the stone slides along the ice, it exerts a force on the ice, and the ice exerts a force back on the stone. Friction can be defined as the reaction of the ground to the forces exerted on it in the horizontal plane by the person or object (in curling, we are concerned with the stone). The friction force on the stone will act in the opposite direction in which the stone is moving, and will decrease the stones velocity, thus slowing it down. If the curlers want the stone to travel further, then they need to reduce the amount of friction. This is done by "sweeping" the ice in order to make it smoother and reduce friction. Sweeping is also done to make the stone "curl."

Another important principle of curling is collisions. One of the strategies in curling is to knock the other teams stone(s) out of the house (scoring area). This involves the collision of one or more stones. Collisions occur frequently in sports, such as hitting a baseball, tennis ball, volleyball, etc. Again, because of Newton's third law, when two objects collide, they exert equal and opposite forces on each other. The sum of the momentum of the two objects will be the same before and after the collision, therefore, there is a conservation of linear momentum. Momentum is defined as the mass of an object or system multiplied by its velocity. Most curling stones have a mass of around 20 kg. So, a stone with a mass of 20 kg and velocity of 7 m/s (meters per second) linear momentum (G) would be 140 kgm/s. When the stone that has been delivered collides with a stone in the house, a change in momentum will occur between the two stones. Because the mass of the stones will remain constant, the change in momentum will be related to the change in velocity of the two stones. Because of the conservation of linear momentum, if the stone in the house's velocity increases to 4 m/s (from 0 m/s before the collision because it was stationary) after the collision, than the stone that was delivered will have a decrease in velocity from 7 m/s to 3 m/s. Check out the video below for some good curling throws.

Earth FROM SPACE

I've been following this astronaut named Soichi Noguchi on twitter because he has been posting the most amazing photos he has been taking of Earth FROM SPACE. What follows is a small sampling. Underneath each picture is what he tweeted when he posted it:

"Lake Pukaki in New Zealand. I love the color!"

"Arabian desert. As I told you before, desert is beautiful."

"Moon rise over Australia. Taken from Cupola side window."

"Oh, Paris! Lindbergh saw these nightlights 83 years ago, on 'the Spirit of St. Louis'."

 "Northern Australia. Impressive river flow."

"Night view of mid-Japan. The far left is Akashi, and the far right is Hamamatsu."

"Bucharest, Romania"

"Molvides Island, Indian Ocean. Breathtakingly beatiful!"

Ewan McGregor for Davidoff Adventure

How come I didn't know about this?? This commercial is so super cheeseball, but I don't care. I love anything Ewan does. I would buy this cologne for my boyfriend but he doesn't wear any. I guess I could always wear it myself. . .

Mmmmmm, yes please.

Crazy for Stripes...

We're so in the mood for stripes lately. It's modern. It's striking. It's fun. It makes your eyes pop.

Here are some great designs using stripes with either wallpapers, fabrics or paint:

Vampire Weekend - Contra - My Review

I’ve been listening and listening and listening to the new album from Vampire Weekend, Contra, and mulling over how I want to write about it. It’s really, really, really good. I had to warm up to their first album. At first I just didn’t get them. I grew up a huge Paul Simon fan – I even saw him in concert when I was 14 years old WITHOUT my parents – and at first listen VW sounded like some strange, young derivatives of his genius. But eventually I came to see them as being something entirely new. I still can’t really put what that "something new" is into words though. Sometimes I feel they could be described as the musical equivalent of Whit Stillman’s film Metropolitan but that’s not quite it either. Bah! I give up.

Their new album takes everything they did on their first one and punches it up tenfold while also adding in a bunch of romance and positivity. Lyrics like "I see you shine in your way, go on, go on, go on" and "Said never pick sides, never choose between two, but I just wanted you, I just wanted you" are absolutely dripping with good feelings. These good feelings are nice because the time in 2008 when I saw Vampire Weekend live they came off a little bit like elitist a-holes. At that time I didn't really care if I ever saw them live again, but with this new album my faith is restored. I'm eager to see them live! With this album they are not trying to maintain that Ivy League, Polo ad image that they projected with the first album, but despite NOT trying they are still achieving it, but not in an elitist a-hole way, but in a "Hey! This is who we ARE!" way. Does that make any sense?

Wow. I read over this and it's an awkward review. I can't corral my thoughts! Just take away this: their new album is fantastic with more fun, romance, and positivity and I really like it.

Here's their new bizarro video, guest starring a Jonas brother, Jake Gyllenhaal, and RZA (among others), for Giving Up the Gun:

TWEETY BIRD BEDDING SET

GO HERE TO SEE MORE!

You might think that the colors in this Tweety Bird bedding set would leave little room for error or give you much choice in choosing curtains, rugs or a wall color for that matter. Anytime you venture out into comforter sets with wild or bright colors like this one, get ready to be bossed around by those same colors.

Fabric that is that bold is not ready to compromise nor is it very forgiving. Your stuff either matches or it doesn't. I can see lots of lime green and possibilities for turquoise blue but I believe that I'd let the yellow of the Tweety Bird bedding set stand alone rather than bringing in lots of Looney Tunes bedroom decorations or bright yellow and orange accent pieces. I'd like to hear your opinions so why please leave your thoughts on this cute girls' bedding set here on Teen Girls Bedding, Bedrooms and Decor. Is it lame or do you love it?

A great source for interior design pictures...

With so many decorating magazines closing lately, we find ourselves starving for pictures of amazing rooms. A good alternative is interiors designers' and photographers' web sites. Often you can view their portolios as a source of inspiration.

Below is one of our favorites, Pieter Estersohn.

PS For more pictures, visit DiggingDecor-it's full of interior design pictures (well, not quite full yet, but it's on its way :) It's a social community network for people who love to decorate. The site is new so we'll need all the contributors we can get! If you love decorating, come join so you can show off your portfolio, share resources and make some friends.

We hope to see you there...
