People, let me tell you that red bedding is hot this fall! Those of you with a tendency towards cool colors may be skeptical and wondering what would make me say (read: scream) such a thing. I can answer that question in one word: catalogs.

This morning I drug my sorry self into the kitchen as usual pinning my hopes for the day on a nice, hot cup of coffee with just a pinch of cinnamon. The java came through as planned and while I was sipping and savoring the aroma that had been missing in my morning since last fall, I thumbed through a few of my favorite catalogs that had been piling up as of late.

As bleary as I was, I spotted the trend even before the caffiene had a chance to kick in. In each and every one of the catalogs I saw red bedding. There was red and black plaid bedding, striped bedding and perhaps my personal favorite was featured in the Pottery Barn catalog, red bedding that had pictures of cardinals on it, which are my favorite birds especially in winter. Their bright red feathers add color to an otherwise bleak landscape.

Zebra bedding is still one of the most popular girls bedding sets but the zebra print and hot pink color combination that was so popular last spring and summer is dressed for the season at hand with scarlet red satin, silk or taffeta fabrics and red and black damask bedding collections have a glow all their own. Yes, dear reader, to say that red bedding is hot this fall may very well be an understatement. To be so obvious that I can spot it before my second cup of coffee, you really can't doubt that it's a trend.

Tell me is the wild, red leopard bedding set in this picture a pick or a pan? I thought I had had enough with decorating with red early last month. But here I am again, going all out on a color just because of a particular holiday that's just around the corner.

Actually, I believe that I'm more into red bedroom decor at the moment than I was during Christmas and I plan to prove that this warm color has lots to offer no matter how badly your parents don't want you to use too much of it in your room! Would you classify lips bedding as retro? I’m on the fence as to whether a comforter set with big pink or red lips on a black background qualifies. Yet something in the graphics takes me back to the 80s and gave me the urge to experiment with using fabrics covered in them as well as decorative items in this shape for a college dorm that I am contracted to decorate for a girl who with the first glance at her outfit and her "big hair" made me think of a very young Madonna.

For this room that would actually be both a bedroom and sitting room, there was a need to tie the lips bedding set(or whatever style my college girl preferred) and the seating together in both color and design. As college girls usually don’t object to lots of color in their living area I thought that in light of the theme of the bedding that I would at the very least look for some pillows shaped like lips.

Boy howdy, did I ever hit the jackpot! Not only did I hit pay dirt in the pillow department I found the perfect sofa that would coordinate with the print of the fabric in the bedding set. I lucked up and came across a funky, red lips couch. The sofa will only sit two comfortably as it’s only about four feet wide, but the scale actually works with the small size of the dorm room better than a big sofa. And the red is a good match to the shades of red in the lips on the comforter. Granted, a lips shaped sofa is not for everybody, but for this young lady who is a throwback to rock stars from the 80s it was the best find ever.

FUNKY BED SHEETS

It's summer and time for bikinis, flip flops and cottages with a view of the ocean. Oh yeah, and it’s time to buy some cool, funky bed sheets for the kids. The reason for this is because chances are that it is very doubtful that your teenage girl will take the time to make her bed unless you make things easy for her. She will not want to be fiddling around with the comforter and accessories that came with the cute bed in a bag set that she just had to have this spring when there are surfboards to ride, ultraviolet rays to catch and cute beach bums to flirt with!

When I was a teen (I’m sure that you will be polite and not inquire as to how long ago that may have been) I knew that my mother would not let me out the door until my room was straight. If I wanted to avoid a lecture on how much money she had spent on my bedding set and decorating the bedroom, the best course of action was to go ahead and tidy up before I opened the door. I needed some tricks to get the job done as quickly as possible so as not to keep my friends waiting in the driveway and then a visiting girlfriend share the tip that she saved her best bed sheets until summer so that her bed looked nice without having to go to the trouble to layer comforters and coverlets.

I thought this was an excellent idea because it’s too hot to sleep under all that cover in my part of the country from April until September. So, after Easter I packed the quilt and most of the pillows in a space bag and pulled out some funky bed sheets (in my case hot pink polka dot bed sheets) that matched my bedroom's color scheme. So long as there were tight, hospital corners and no wrinkles my mom was happy and my friends were happy that they didn’t have to wait for me in a hot car for an hour.

Black, purple and red rose bedding puts a whole new twist on the old saying Gather Your Roses While You May. In fact, I’m not really sure what that is supposed to mean, if it is taken from a poem or a book or what. Think of how Georgia O’Keefe or Andy Warhol might have painted roses; that’s the kind of red rose bedding set that she is searching for.

If you can find a red and black bed in a bag set with large roses on a black background, grab it fast! Throw in some big, vinyl rose wall stickers or decals and your young lady is going to be so impressed that you knew exactly what she had in mind.
