Boho chic bedding can be pricey but WHO CARES when you get lucky and find an amazing crystal chandy like this one for LESS THAN $10? It's a fact that funky bedding that looks like it came from the thrift store can cost a bundle. The truth of the matter is that authentic, vintage Bohemian style bedroom decor and bedding is very hard to find...especially the bedding.

On the rare occasion, I find some tasty quilts and comforters in a musty old trunk at an estate sale that require nothing but a few stitches to replace a quilted section or two and a good cleaning to freshen them up. But after you figure in the time it takes me to preview the goods before the auction and the actual sale; the real stuff becomes pretty darn expensive.

It's just a fact of life that there aren't many ways to cut corners in getting good looking, Bohemian style bedding that is in good new or used condition. So, I really had an "AHA" moment when I saw this funky, light fixture that was so cheap. Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie both have nice selections but to get good deals, (once again) I have to spend a lot of my spare time watching for sales on discontinued bedding.

When I have a request for bohemian style decorating, the urge to lecture my customer on the basics of bohemian decor tends to overtake me. Unlike many other styles, the eclectic hodge podge that as a whole gives that look that so many believe is simple and easy to duplicate, can be a difficult undertaking.


For one thing, the boho look can’t be purchased in the home and garden section of your local bed and bath shop. There you may find treasures beyond your wildest dreams including bohemian bedding that tells a story. It’s my belief that it is the story behind each decorative item that makes for a unique room design that is impossible for another decorator to duplicate.

Is it possible to buy a brand new set of bed linens labeled as bohemian bedding and decorate a bedroom in a manner that is esthetically pleasing and attractive? Of course, any bedroom with the right balance of color can be made visually pleasing. I've come to the realization that the right accessories, which in this case are exotic, beaded curtain panels, can transform most any comforter set or an inexpensive bed in a bag into a blissful bohemian dream. There's no need for luxurious silk designer fabrics so long as the jewel tone color scheme is in place. Mix and match the weave as well as the color of decorative materials through the use of over stuffed throw pillows, shams and floor coverings. If you have no objection to your teen girl's boudoir taking on the look of a harem; big comfortable floor pillows and upholstered hassocks would look pretty cool.

Perhaps the key to this style of decor is in the lighting reflected through the beadwork used as window treatments or even to take the place of a closet or bedroom entry door in a pinch. Yards and yards of polyester fabrics to gather and drape for effect cost less than one single yard of raw silk. For a bedroom or college dorm room where chocolate milk or soft drinks and chips will be consumed by giggling teenage girls, the polyester material that can be machine washed is a much more intelligent choice than natural fabrics that will have to be taken to the dry cleaner to remove any stains.

Anchor your faux jewels with earthtones in clever combinations like purple and brown or a rich and luxurious bohemian style purple and green. Hang some lanterns on the walls to resemble something that might be found in a Bedouin chieftain's tent in the desert and your cheap and easy teenage girl's bedroom makeover can be declared a stylish success.
